Lush has recently released four different routines from some of their best-selling products. The goal? Layering scents and products to express your personality and refine your smell. Lush has always put forward its different steps to a polished beauty routine from when you walk into the shower to out the door. Layering scents helps with longevity and, overall, smelling better. Applying certain products before others can also help significantly with how heavy a scent feels and how it evolves throughout the day. There’s a reason why people say to apply Vaseline on your pulse points, including wrists or neck, to make your perfume last. Lush builds on this and creates its own rules for “smellmaxxing”. I received one of the routines for review.
Layering smells is also about trying out new combinations that you might expect to clash. In these routines, Lush has four best-selling fragrances that boost your mood and confidence. The perfumes are made with organic ethanol ethically sourced in Brazil, in line with Lush’s biodiversity commitments.
Florals for Spring? Groundbreaking.
For this routine, I received the Rose Jam shower gel, the Dream Cream body lotion and the Sweet Pea perfume. The Rose Jam shower gel, a product I was already familiar with, is something I have loved for a long time. It’s easy to use and the smell is gentle yet lingering. It’s made from rose oil, sweet vanilla pod infusion and Sicilian lemon oil. I also personally like to use the Ro’s Argan body conditioner after the shower gel. It isn’t included in this routine but it’s also a rose and argan scent which pairs beautifully and leaves your skin really soft and plump due to being slightly heavier than a lotion.
The Dream Cream body lotion is meant for sensitive skin, made with oat milk, chamomile and lavender. It sinks into the skin without leaving any sticky residue. I found it particularly nice as an after-shaving cream to soothe the skin. Receiving this cream in the summer felt like a godsend. With its soothing properties, the cream is perfect for this time of year after the beach, shaving or waxing, to help with a sunburn or to preserve your skin through the summer months.
This routine pairs with either Sweet Pea or Ginger perfume. I opted for Sweet Pea, which is inspired by a Lush perfumer’s bridal bouquet. It has a soft floral scent which works particularly well for the daytime, paired with fragrant herbs like rosemary and sage. I noticed the scent deepens over time and then returns to its initial softness. Retailing for £125, it’s a good, slightly cheaper alternative to Jo Malone perfumes, which also offers a sweet pea fragrance for £152. The perfume has notes of rose, which is why it goes sweetly with the other rose elements of the routine.
Is the layering method worth it? I think if you like a pamper and have time in the morning to apply these products after the shower, it’ll be worth it throughout the day. Each product brings out the other more and it helps your perfume stay on. Applying the cream and perfume whilst still in the bathroom with the steam will help the smells penetrate the skin even more. The three other routines cater to every preference. If you’re not a florals person, take your pick from Sappho with their Sticky Dates products for something sweet and warm, cult favourite Devil’s Nightcap for earthy depth, or Hairdresser’s Husband and Junk for a hit of citrus
